Upper and lower parts in the same fascicle; composed by Master Dehui; translated by Zhendì (Chen Zhendì); one of the Zhaocheng Guangsheng Monastery gold-block Tripitaka editions, Jin-printed edition

The Treatise on Following Characteristics is a Mahāyāna treatise traditionally recorded as composed by Dharma Master Dehui and translated by Paramārtha of the Chen dynasty. This item is an image edition of the Jin-printed canon from the Guangsheng Monastery Zhaocheng Canon system, with upper and lower sections in the same fascicle, preserving the printed appearance of early Chinese-translated Buddhist treatises within the Jin Canon system.

The Treatise on Following Characteristics is included in Volume 32 of the Taishō Canon, number T1641. Catalog records mostly identify it as composed by Dharma Master Dehui and translated by the Tripiṭaka Master Paramārtha from Ujjain in India, in one fascicle. Paramārtha was an important translator during the Southern Dynasties period, and his translations are closely connected with the transmission of She-lun studies, Consciousness-Only studies, and Tathāgatagarbha thought in China. The Treatise on Following Characteristics centers on analysis of dharma characteristics and doctrinal principles, developing issues such as the characteristics of dharmas, suffering, origination, cessation, the path, cognition, and cultivation and realization. Its language is concise yet rich in dialectical character. This item is marked “upper and lower sections in the same fascicle” and also belongs to the Guangsheng Monastery Zhaocheng Jin-printed Canon, making it useful for examining the layout of Jin-printed Buddhist texts, the transmission of the canon, and the preservation of Northern and Southern Dynasties translated treatises within later Buddhist canons.
