The Record of the Mirror of the Sect extensively cites suttas, treatises, and writings from various schools, using “mind” as the core to integrate the doctrinal meanings of Chan and broader teachings. It is both a Chan doctrinal text and an important Song-dynasty work of Buddhist synthesis, correlation, and classification, and it has had a major influence on later understandings of the Chan–teaching relationship and theories of mind-and-nature.
